Self-Care Tips For Surviving SXSW

Are you planning a visit to Austin for SXSW this year? We’re sharing our best self-care tips with you to survive the long days and miles of walking you may experience while enjoying the festival.

  1. Hydrate! There a many free adult beverages offered at each venue for SXSW, make sure you swap out a water or juice in between alcoholic drinks. Bring a refillable water bottle with you if you aren’t sure if each venue is serving drinks and refill at stations in the convention center. (Water aids in nutrient delivery: Our muscles require essential nutrients, including proteins and electrolytes, for repair and growth. Proper hydration enhances the distribution of these vital nutrients to the muscle tissues, ensuring faster recovery.)

  2. Pace yourself. Look for events that are all close together to avoid walking long distances in a short period of time. Make sure you map out a few healthy restaurants to visit for a quick bite to eat, as most events do not serve food with their complimentary drinks. (To keep your energy level high: eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of unrefined carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, with an emphasis on vegetables, whole grains, and healthy oils.)

  3. Roll out stiff muscles with a tennis ball. (The massaging effect of a tennis ball reduces the hyperactivity of the nerves in the lower back, reducing the pain signals sent to the brain. A tennis ball can also help: Reduce tension in the muscles and connective tissues. Improve the functioning of blood vessels and increase blood flow.)

  4. Schedule a relaxing spa visit with us while your in Austin! (The Hidden Jewel Studio has several massage therapists available during the two weeks of SXSW to accomodate a rejuventating massage session, relaxing facial or an acupuncture session to improve sleep, minimize stress, and help you relax after a busy few days!
